Discover Methacrylates (MAA, MMA, nBMA)
Our new Methacrylate filling operation in Zwijndrecht supports Univar's professional operators to safely pack drums & IBCs. Our European supply chain ensures we have local stock to reliably service our customers packed requirements.
Today we are now packing Methacrylic Acid (MAA) from bulk at our Zwijndrecht facility in the Netherlands (Phase 1). We store stabilised packed product in heated warehouses to prevent freezing & ensure safe handling.
By the end of 2024, following further investment (Phase 2) we will also start packing Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) and n-Butyl Methacrylate (nBMA) offering the same benefits to our customers.
The characteristics of the chemical substances, with freezing points below 15 degrees, make them quite challenging to handle. Freezing & thawing is acceptable but is not desirable. We have invested in a supply chain infrastructure to avoid this where possible.

Stabilisation
To prevent polymerisation during transport, methacrylate monomers are stabilised by the addition of inhibitors.
NB: MAA is supplied at MEHQ 250 because of its high reactivity and potentially more serious consequences if under-stabilised.
Applications
Coatings
Forming the polymer backbone for both waterborne & solvent-based systems. The choice of monomer affects the glass temperature and minimum film formation temperature of the polymer. MMA and nBMA provide excellent weatherability and colour stability for use in architectural coatings for outdoor applications. Coatings based on methacrylates also have excellent water resistance and gloss retention as well as being low VOC.
Composites
methacrylate monomers are widely used as reactive diluents, crosslinkers, and raw materials for polymer synthesis in polymer composites. Lucite International’s methacrylates, MMA and nBMA, are used as co-monomers with styrene in unsaturated polyester resins (UPR) to enhance the weather resistance of gel coats and laminate resins.
Adhesives
Methacrylate monomers are used in binders for water based pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) and for acrylic hot melt adhesives. They improve mechanical properties and provide additional functionalities like adhesion promotion. Acrylic PSAs are mainly used as adhesives for labels, tapes or lamination, especially in the packaging industry. Methacrylic acid based UV cure adhesives have excellent toughness, impact resistance and tensile strength.
Oil Additives
Amongst other benefits, methacrylate monomers can be used as part of a viscosity modifier system to aid low temperature performance, thermal stability and fuel efficiency.
Inks
Commonly used in a resin form, methacrylate monomers provide good substrate adhesion, resistance to discolouring by UV and heat as well as resistance to oil, grease and water.
Textiles
Methacrylate monomers are used as binders in the manufacture of non-woven fabrics, as sizing agents and in finishing of fabrics.
Coatings
MMA and nBMA form polymer backbones for waterborne and solvent-based systems, offering weatherability, colour stability, water resistance, and low VOCs.
Composites
